The Porto City Council announced the cancellation of 1,413 short-term rental registrations,
a measure representing approximately 13% of all registered accommodations in the city.
The decision comes as part of an inspection and data update process carried out by the local government.

According to the city, many of the registrations in question had irregularities related to the lack of required documentation, particularly the absence of valid liability insurance, an essential requirement for the legal operation of this type of accommodation.

Most of the cancellations are concentrated in the city’s most central and tourist-heavy areas, where the number of short-term rentals has grown significantly in recent years. The city government emphasizes that the goal of this measure is not to penalize operators, but rather to ensure greater oversight, transparency, and compliance within the sector.

The affected owners were notified in advance and had the opportunity to rectify the situation before the final decision. Even so, more than a thousand registrations were ultimately canceled.

This initiative comes at a time when the debate surrounding the impact of short-term rentals remains a hot topic, particularly in major cities, due to concerns about housing, tourism pressure, and urban balance.

The Porto City Council states that it will continue to closely monitor the sector, promoting a more sustainable tourism industry that complies with current regulations
